An extremely tragic traffic accident is causing a stir in Styria: a 53-year-old driver sped off the Ennstalstrasse, the car was catapulted into the air, landed on parked cars and caught fire. The woman was left to burn helplessly. An eyewitness describes the terrible moments.
There is great consternation in the Ennstal after a tragic traffic accident occurred on Saturday on the accident-prone B 320, which gruesomely claimed the life of a 53-year-old local woman.
According to the police, the woman drove her car off the right side of the road on Ennstalstrasse in Diemlach (municipality of Mitterberg-St. Martin) on Saturday afternoon for an unknown reason and crashed into the concrete base of a bicycle underpass.
The force of the impact catapulted the car into the air and crashed into several parked cars parked at a popular inn and meeting place for motorcyclists.
Car flew through the air
“I was just sitting on the terrace when I heard a huge noise, and then suddenly a car crashed through a billboard and flew into three parked cars,” says innkeeper Manfred Schierl, who witnessed the incredible scenes firsthand from his inn.
The car immediately started burning and the three parked cars were also completely engulfed in flames. What happened next, the innkeeper will probably never forget: “The woman was still alive, she got out of the back door of the car, her clothes were completely burned and she was screaming,” says Schierl.
“We were completely powerless”
The innkeeper and some guests wanted to help the 53-year-old, “but we couldn’t get close, it was so extremely hot, we were unfortunately completely helpless,” the witness said. When the first fire brigade arrived, it was already too late. The woman was beyond help; she had to burn painfully in the fire.
“We are used to a lot here, this is the third accident here, but I have never experienced anything like this,” says landlord Manfred Schierl.
Emergency services from five fire brigades extinguished the burning vehicles. “Four cars were completely burned out and two others were hit quite badly. The facade of an adjacent building also burned down,” says Christoph Schlüßlmayr from the Liezen fire brigade association, describing the challenging operation.
More than twenty people, emergency services and witnesses, were cared for by the crisis intervention team.
