“I stab him, I kill him”: the prosecutor quoted these words from a voice message the suspect had sent before the violence. Days later, she stabbed her ex during an argument, which is why the charge is called attempted murder. “I just wanted to be left alone,” she said during the trial at the Salzburg regional court.
The suspect, a Bosnian woman (43), born in Salzburg, and the victim had been a couple since 2010. But there was a real crisis, and there were always separations and reconciliations. Until October 18, 2023. “The suspect stabbed the man several times and allegedly tried to kill him,” prosecutor Mathias Haidinger explained during the jury trial in Salzburg on Tuesday. The prosecutor listed the injuries: a cut in the ear, one in the forearm and a life-threatening stab in the chest up to the lung: “If the stab had been carried out slightly differently, the victim could have been dead now Haidinger also speaks of a “deep hatred” of the suspect towards the victim and “clear evidence that the suspect wanted to kill”.
One bloody act, two versions
A friend was visiting the 43-year-old that day. There was alcohol and drugs, and then the then-boyfriend, who later became a victim, showed up. “He pulled out a knife and threatened to kill himself,” the previously innocent woman explained to the jury. Then a scuffle broke out. She had the knife in her hand: “And I must have caught him in the stomach somehow.”
The suspect further emphasizes: “I didn’t want to kill him. I just wanted him to be scared and leave me alone.” And said several times that she herself was scared. Judge Gabriele Glatz makes it clear: “Such a stab requires effort, not clumsiness.”
Escaped from apartment with injuries
The victim’s version also sounds very different: “We were still talking normally. Then I got a phone call from my mother. During the phone call I got a blow to the back of my head.” Then the woman attacked him and the table flew away. “The only thing I saw was her pulling the knife out of my chest.” He fled bleeding and was later found by an acquaintance outside a bar. Rescue, surgery, the scars remain. And the knife? “I never carry a knife,” said the man, while telling the truth. “That was her knife.”
Particularly stressful for the defendant: days earlier she had sent clear spoken messages to friends with insults and death threats against her ex. She also had an aggressive side, according to the prosecutor. The defense, on the other hand, holds the man responsible: he repeatedly hit and threatened her.
A verdict is still pending. A new day of negotiations is scheduled for Wednesday.
