First the good news: a 74-year-old aviation athlete survived the ‘landing’ on a spar in the Mühlviertel unscathed. The bad news: to save the paraglider, the fire brigade had to cut down the tree.
A 74-year-old German took off with his paraglider from the Marsbach launch site in the municipality of Hofkirchen im Mühlkreis on Sunday around 2 p.m. and wanted to land in Freizell near the Danube. During the flying phase he turned the paraglider due to the tailwind. Suddenly, the right side of the umbrella collapsed and the 74-year-old landed on a spruce tree at a height of about forty feet.
Independently made an emergency call
He independently called the emergency services. The accident site was on extremely impassable, steep terrain in the Donauleiten. He was eventually rescued by the fire brigade’s altitude rescue teams. The 74-year-old was not injured. To save the paraglider, the fire brigade had to cut down a tree
