Response to missiles – Israel wants to ‘harm’ Iran, but not war

Date:

According to the media, during the deliberations of the Israeli war cabinet, various scenarios of responses to the major Iranian attack were discussed. Israel’s goal: they want to damage Iran, but not unleash a full-scale war. Chief of the General Staff Herzi Halevi emphasized on Monday that an answer would be forthcoming.

“As we look ahead, we are considering our steps,” Halevi emphasized during a visit to the Nevatim airbase in the Negev Desert. An attack with so many rockets on Israel’s territory will be followed by a response.

Israel wants to coordinate with the US
During the nearly three-hour meeting of the body chaired by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, several responses of varying nature were put forward, the Israeli television channel Channel 12 reported on Monday. Some of the options can therefore be implemented immediately. During discussions about a response to Tehran’s attack at the weekend, it was also discussed that Israel wanted to coordinate measures with its main ally, the US. However, there is no final decision yet. However, observers expect the answer to come as soon as possible.

Opposition politician Yair Lapid sharply criticized Netanyahu. Under his cabinet, which also included right-wing extremist politicians, Israel experienced a “complete loss” of its military deterrent capabilities, liberal Lapid wrote on Monday in the online service X.

A spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry demanded recognition from the international community for its alleged “restraint” towards Israel. “It seems clear that Iran has adapted its attack so that it can be contained by the Israelis,” former NATO Secretary General George Robertson said in an APA interview in Vienna. Iran’s first direct attack was a “dramatic escalation”, but Tehran clearly did not want to score a hit.

Data on missiles and drones published
Meanwhile, Iranian state media have published information about the missiles used. According to information from the state agency Irna, medium-range missiles of the Emad and Kheibar Shekan types were used. The modern version of the latter has a range of more than 1,800 kilometers. According to the report, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards also fired Paweh cruise missiles at Israel in the operation called ‘Sincere Promise’. According to the state agency, they should be able to fly up to 900 kilometers per hour.

The drones used in the retaliatory attack were of the Shahed 136 type. These are the same kamikaze drones that Russia uses in the fight against Ukraine. They are mainly characterized by their cheap construction.
