Justified? – School closes toilets during lessons

Date:

For many teachers they are a nuisance: students who go to the toilet during class. A school in Graz is now taking a special step: the toilets are only unlocked during breaks! But the reason for this lies elsewhere.

It is a very unusual step that the BG/BRG Klusemann in Graz has decided to take – and one that not everyone can understand. Since Monday, all sanitary facilities have been locked during class hours and only unlocked during breaks. “This means that students do not have access to the sanitary facilities during class or outside breaks, unless they are in the short breaks of 15 to 25 minutes,” says an informant who wishes to remain anonymous, the “crown”.

And if it ‘must’? You must then contact one of the two school caretakers, who will unlock the toilets if necessary. But they are ‘mainly engaged in gardening or repairing all kinds of things’, it is said. “With this whole procedure you could easily miss 15 to 20 minutes of class.”

Postscript: “This situation is not only unacceptable, but also extremely worrying as it endangers the health and well-being of students.”

7,000 euros in damage due to vandalism
The principal of the Klusemannstraße secondary school, Klaus Tasch, does not want to leave the descriptions as they are. He confirms that the toilets are blocked – but there is a reason for that: “The action was necessary because a few students caused a lot of damage to the toilets and made it impossible for the other students to use the toilets.” dispensers were broken off and toilets were unusable.

If you need to go to the toilet, you can do so easily. “This does not endanger their health; Students can easily go to the toilet during class by contacting the school counselor. It was already used today.”

The meeting is still pending
The new measure does not appear to have been agreed with the parent association, although the vandalism practices have often been discussed in the school community committee. The measure was “an emergency decision by the school board,” Tasch said, and will be discussed at the next SGA meeting.
