The historic stock exchange in the Danish capital Copenhagen was on fire on Tuesday morning. The fire caused the building’s spire to collapse on Tuesday morning, causing extensive damage.
Photos from Copenhagen show the huge column of smoke above the city. Flames burned from the building for hours and several streets and the area around the fair were cordoned off.
Passersby burst into tears
The fire brigade arrived with a large contingent and the extinguishing work is still in full swing. Copenhagen police expect the area to remain cordoned off for a long time.
Passersby even cried at the sight of the burning building and its striking tower is one of Copenhagen’s landmarks.
Artwork saved
The old stock exchange also houses a large art collection, including the work “From the Copenhagen Stock Exchange” by PS Krøyer, which was taken away by several people during the fire.
The fair is currently being restored
The cause of the fire was initially unclear. The building was completed in 1625 with a church tower and is one of the oldest buildings in Copenhagen.
The fair is currently being restored and is therefore covered in scaffolding. The restoration aims to correct an incorrect renovation of the building in the 19th century and restore the facade to its original appearance.
