Before Whit Sunday, the storm center issued the highest storm warning for Vienna and the surrounding area – in the east of the country you have to watch out for heavy hail showers and starting rain in the evening. There is a chance of large amounts of rain until Monday. We may even experience “the heaviest thunderstorm day of the year yet”.
Storms had already caused extensive damage in Lower Austria and Burgenland on Saturday. The premiere of the ORF “Starnacht” in Mörbisch had to be canceled in the evening for safety reasons and visitors fled to their vehicles and to safe halls. According to the Austrian Hagleversicherung, agriculture had to accept damage of about 1.5 million euros.
50 to 60 liters of rain per square meter in Vienna
Warm, moist air masses are also likely to cause severe thunderstorms on Sunday. The “Maya” layer moves north from northern France via the Benelux, initially creating “perfect” conditions for storms in Upper Austria, Bavaria and eastern Switzerland during the day. A pressure wave should also form along the Danube in the evening, reports the storm center.
The thunderstorms finally reach the federal capital in the evening: the highest severe weather warning level has been issued for Vienna. “It will rain heavily in your region from Sunday night. Monday morning there will be a total of 50 to 60 liters per square meter,” the storm center said. “All in all, there is potential for the worst thunderstorm day of the year in Austria,” it warned on Twitter.
Floods also possible in the southeast of the country
Severe thunderstorms are also expected in the southeast of Austria in the evening, coming from the Styrian mountains. There is a warning for hail and also for local flooding.
