After the massive attack with missiles and drones from Iran, the Israeli government is now threatening timely retaliation. “Iran has changed the modus operandi, the previous rules of the game,” says Lieutenant Colonel Christoph Göd in the krone.tv lecture. There are several options for possible counterattacks. Nevertheless, both sides were able to sell the attack as a success.
The Iranians took a calculated risk, the lieutenant colonel said. “The attack was certainly not intended to fail.” The interception rate was therefore not expected to be as high as it actually was. 99 percent of drones and missiles were intercepted by allies.
Deterrent potential necessary
In fact, both sides could sell the attack as a success, Göd says. “Iran can show that it has taken revenge for the attack in Damascus. And the Israelis could actually say the same thing: they’ve had success here by intercepting so much.” Nevertheless, it is important to create a so-called deterrent potential against Iran on Israel’s side to prevent further attacks in the future. There are several options here.
Attack on military facilities
At the top end of the escalation spectrum would be a direct attack on Iranian territory, for example on nuclear installations. “However, that would be a very complex attack that would require the support of the US on the one hand, but also of third countries when it comes to overflight rights.” However, this case is quite unlikely, as the US has publicly stated that it refuses to do so. “What remains as targets are military installations such as the Revolutionary Guard or installations of the army or naval forces.”
In the middle spectrum, attacks on representatives of Iran, the so-called proxies, can be seen. These could be proxies such as Hezbollah in Lebanon or military forces in Syria and Iraq. “So to speak, the revolutionary forces of the Revolutionary Guards stationed there.” At the lower end of the spectrum, the expert sees measures of cyber attacks against Iran or measures of disinformation or destabilization of the regime by supporting the opposition.
