Austrians, especially from the right, see extremism as a threat

Date:

The Austrians absolutely see extremism as a threat. After corruption, extremism, together with unchecked immigration and integration problems, is seen as the second biggest risk to the democratic order. At least that is what a Gallup survey among a thousand respondents shows. Right-wing extremism and religious extremism are more worrying than left-wing extremism.

The research shows that the number of people who see democracy threatened is surprisingly high, namely 46 percent. Three in five respondents see the danger from the radical right as very or somewhat great, while 46 percent consider the radical left as a risk. 55 percent of the population sees religious extremism and 40 percent of the population that is ecologically motivated as a threat to society.

FPÖ supporters have a more relaxed view of right-wing radicals
In terms of political orientation, only FPÖ supporters overwhelmingly believe that the radical right does not pose a threat to Austria. The majority of supporters of the Freedom Party and the ÖVP see left-wing extremism as a threat. There are also greater concerns about ecological extremism in the ranks of the FPÖ than in other political camps. Religiously motivated extremism poses a smaller threat to supporters of the Greens, NEOS and SPÖ than to supporters of the ÖVP and FPÖ.

When asked whether anti-democratic political parties should be banned in Austria, 44 percent are in favor and 35 percent are against. .
