Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Germany for his country’s continued support following the visit of Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck.
“We appreciate Germany’s leadership role, which helps us protect lives not only in Ukraine, but also all of Europe itself – to preserve precisely that Europe that knows how to live peacefully, knows the law and knows how to care for people .” Zelenskyj said on Thursday.
The conference on the reconstruction of Ukraine, to be held in Berlin in June, will focus mainly on bilateral projects in the defense and energy industries, he announced in his daily video address.
The Ukrainian president said he discussed the situation at the front and the needs, especially in the field of anti-aircraft defense, with Habeck. In a separate post on Telegram, he also praised the federal government’s decision to send another Patriot anti-aircraft system. Ukraine has suffered greatly from Russian attacks with drones, missiles and glide bombs.
NATO considers giving Patriot to Kiev justified
From German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s perspective, there is no reasonable reason for other NATO countries to deny Ukraine’s request for additional Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems. NATO has also made it very clear that the supply of additional systems is justified to provide Ukraine with better protection against Russian air attacks, the SPD politician said on Thursday evening after the EU summit in Brussels.
He again took the opportunity during the summit meeting to promote further deliveries in many discussions. According to Scholz, Ukraine has specifically requested seven additional Patriot systems. After Germany had already promised one, it now hoped that six more would be found in other NATO countries, he explained.
According to Zelensky’s information from early April, 25 Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems, each with six to eight launchers or similar equipment, would be needed to fully protect Ukrainian airspace. To protect the most important locations, seven additional systems would initially be sufficient.
Weapons production is increasing
Despite the increasing problems at the front due to the lack of weapons and ammunition, Zelensky expressed optimism in his video message. It was possible to increase the production of Ukrainian artillery systems of the Bohdana type to ten units per month. “That is a good result.” Overall, weapons production has also increased significantly, especially in the areas of drone and ammunition production, the president said. Ukraine has been fending off a large-scale Russian invasion for more than two years. However, the country is highly dependent on Western military aid.
