The prisoner (23), who had been on the run since Tuesday, voluntarily returned to Korneuburg prison on Thursday.
The 23-year-old turned himself in at the prison around 9:45 p.m., police spokesman Raimund Schwaigerlehner said Friday. The prisoner had been on the run since September 2023. The ministry recently said the inmate had completed “a significant number of prison relaxations related to freedom without incident.”
There is still a short remaining sentence remaining
“Even considering the short remaining sentence of only three months still to be served, there was no risk of absconding,” it was emphasized. Prison guards immediately ran after the prisoner and the officers were supported by police.
However, the prisoner was able to escape. It was unclear on Friday where the man had been after the escape. A search had turned out negative. There have been several cases of prisoner escapes in recent months.
Stein prison inmate still in hiding
There is still no trace of Islam Y., who escaped on November 14, 2023 during a research appointment at Krems University Hospital. The high-risk prisoner was serving an eleven-year sentence in Stein prison for, among other things, aggravated robbery.
