Taiwan says it has spotted 21 Chinese military aircraft off the coast of the self-governing island. Seventeen of the planes crossed the unofficial maritime boundary known as the median line, the Defense Ministry in Taipei said on Saturday, a month before President Lai Ching-te, who was elected early this year, took office.
China views Taiwan as a breakaway province that should be reunited with the mainland – through military force if necessary. Beijing has regularly sent fighter jets and warships to the island for years.
Since Taiwan’s presidential election in mid-January, relations between Beijing and Taipei have been particularly tense, with the Chinese government classifying election winner Lai as a “separatist.” He is scheduled to take office on May 20.
