Authorities say one person was killed in a collision between two Japanese military helicopters and seven others are missing. Rescuers are said to have discovered debris in the sea.
“We believe the two helicopters have crashed,” Japanese Defense Minister Minoru Kihara told reporters on Sunday. The navy said no other aircraft or ships were in the area, according to Japanese broadcaster NHK. It is therefore unlikely that another country would be involved in the incident.
A spokesman for the Japanese armed forces confirmed the incident to AFP news agency, saying one person was rescued but later pronounced dead.
Crashes off the Izu Islands in the Pacific Ocean
The reason for the crash is unknown, Kihara said. The helicopters were conducting “drills to combat submarines at night.” According to broadcaster NHK, the two helicopters crashed off the Izu Islands in the Pacific Ocean. Contact with the two helicopters was lost one after the other.
