The EU elections in June are already casting their shadows: Ursula von der Leyen is expected to enter the race as the top candidate of the conservative European People’s Party. The President of the European Commission made her first election campaign announcement: in the event of a second term, she wants her own EU Commissioner for Defense.
Von der Leyen said on Saturday at the Munich Security Conference which member state will provide this, which has yet to be clarified.
EU arms policy strategy
She also announced that the European Commission would present a strategy for a common arms policy for the European Union in three weeks.
The former German Defense Minister made four points: first, Europe must simply spend more money, and second, resources must be used better. There is a need for joint procurement and framework agreements, also to improve the interoperability of systems in the EU.
Use resources purposefully
Third, a European defense industry with good jobs must be specifically created, the CDU politician said, referring to the production of Patriot air defense systems. Fourth, the EU must look carefully at what is needed in Ukraine to target resources.
Russia is currently numerically superior and thousands of young men are being sacrificed. “We have to be smarter than Russia,” Von der Leyen emphasizes. To this end, the European Commission will soon open a coordination office in Kiev.
