WEGA had to move in Vienna-Döbling on Thursday afternoon after a mother (38) barricaded herself in an apartment with her three children. She had previously lost custody.
Because there was a suspicion of child abduction, officers were alerted to the 38-year-old’s apartment. According to police, a four-year-old girl, a boy of eleven and a girl of thirteen were inside.
Four year old cannot be found
Shortly before the door was broken open by WEGA emergency services, the 38-year-old let the officers in. The mother, 13-year-old and 11-year-old son were found in the apartment. However, there was no sign of the four-year-old.
Sheets tied together
However, during the search, knotted sheets were discovered. According to police, it is suspected that the mother “rappelled” the child from the second floor using the sheets and was picked up by an unknown person.
Mother arrested
The 38-year-old was arrested. She declined to make a statement. After the two older siblings were taken care of by children and youth care staff and taken to the crisis center by taxi, both escaped and ran away, reports Ingrid Pöschmann, press spokeswoman for child and youth care. A manhunt was launched.
The family had been known for years for reports of danger, involving severe neglect by the mother, for example ignoring the children’s compulsory education or allowing unlimited media consumption. The woman showed some understanding of her parenting duties during conversations with MA11, but so far she seemed overwhelmed when it came to carrying them out.
