Eleven traffic accidents occurred on the A1 motorway in the Upper Austrian Lake District on Saturday afternoon due to sudden icy conditions. Vehicles with summer tires started to skid.
Due to the weather conditions on Saturday, there was a heavy deposit of ice grains over a distance of only a few hundred meters. As a result, driving conditions suddenly changed, the Upper Austrian police reported. Cars with summer tires skidded and crashed into the guardrails.
Heavily damaged cars
Near Straß im Attergau, seven vehicles skidded due to ice grains on the road. Two cars hit the guardrail but stopped on the hard shoulder.
Shortly afterwards, five more cars were thrown. The car driven by a 58-year-old German crashed into the back of a minibus driven by a 38-year-old Romanian. The car and the minibus were severely damaged. There were eight other people in the minivan, but none were injured. The German and his wife were also unharmed, but were taken to the Vöcklabruck hospital for a check-up – both were able to leave that same evening.
