Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sees “an opportunity for victory” against Russia after approving new US aid to his attacked country. Moscow doesn’t see it that way at all. Even the approximately 57 billion euros approved by the US House of Representatives on Saturday will not prevent Ukraine’s defeat, according to a Russian representative to the United Nations.
“There is nothing to celebrate,” said Russia’s deputy ambassador to the United Nations in New York, Dmitry Polyansky. The war will continue like this: “thousands of Ukrainians will go into the meat grinder,” Polyansky wrote on the social network Supporters to keep him alive,” the diplomat said.
Kremlin spokesperson: “US enriches itself through war in Ukraine”
Immediately after the decision, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov accused the US of further enriching itself through the war by supplying weapons and ammunition to Ukraine. Moscow repeatedly criticizes Western military aid as a means to prolong the war. On the other hand, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked the US for its support in the fight against Russia’s war of aggression. Kiev had repeatedly emphasized that Western military aid was crucial for the survival of the country fighting for its independence.
What happens to America’s billions?
Ukraine now expects that its fight against Russia’s war of aggression will be strengthened. Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced on Facebook that about 50 billion dollars (about 47 billion euros) of the package should be spent on the defense of Ukraine. That means more weapons for Ukraine, including more anti-aircraft guns and longer-range projectiles.
$7.8 billion is earmarked to support the Ukrainian state budget. $1.57 billion is planned for economic aid and $400 million for border protection and demining. The money should also be used to finance the rehabilitation of important infrastructure.
