Poland has declared its willingness to station nuclear weapons to deter Russia. Warsaw will submit to the wishes of its allies, President Andrzej Duda said. He had already raised the sensitive issue “several times” during bilateral meetings with the US.
“If our allies decide to station nuclear weapons on our territory in the context of nuclear weapons sharing to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank, we are ready to do so,” Duda said in an interview with the “Fakt” newspaper published on Monday.
Meeting with Trump
NATO member Poland is one of Ukraine’s main supporters and borders both the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad and Russian ally Belarus.
Duda, who is currently in Canada, discussed the war in Ukraine with former US President Donald Trump during a visit to the United States last week. The Polish head of state met Trump’s successor Joe Biden in March.
Topic ‘For a while’
The issue of a possible stationing of nuclear weapons in Poland has been discussed between Poland and the US “for some time,” Duda said. “I have brought up this subject several times.”
“Russia is increasingly militarizing the Kaliningrad region,” Duda continued. He also referred to the stationing of tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, which Moscow moved there in the summer of 2023.
Nuclear threats
Since the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine in February 2022, Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin has repeatedly threatened to use nuclear weapons.
At the NATO summit in Vilnius in July 2023, alliance members pledged to take all necessary steps to ensure the credibility and effectiveness of “their nuclear deterrent mission, including further modernizing their nuclear capabilities and updating their planning process.”
