Once again a tourist’s search for the perfect holiday photo has come to a fatal end. A Chinese woman ventured too close to the crater rim of Indonesia’s Ijen volcano – the 31-year-old lost her balance and fell 76 meters into the active volcano.
Holidaymaker Huang Lihong was on a tour of the national park in Indonesia’s East Java province with her husband. However, she did not maintain a safe distance at the edge of the active volcano’s crater, as ‘Hongxing News’ reported. She had to pay for this mistake with her life.
The 31-year-old risked her life for this photo:
Holidaymaker tripped over clothes
The tour guide warned the couple several times to observe the prescribed safety distance of two to three meters from the crater rim. At first they stuck to it, but then they came closer and closer to the abyss.
The Chinese woman apparently wanted to get closer to a tree so she could pose in front of it and walked even further towards the edge of the crater. When she finally tripped over her clothes, she couldn’t find anything to hold on to – and fell into the depths.
It took emergency services more than two hours to recover the tourist’s body. She is said to have died on impact. Indonesian authorities are treating her death as an accident.
