Senior officials and a deputy minister have already been arrested as part of a corruption investigation. Now a sitting minister of President Volodymyr Zelensky is being targeted.
According to media reports, Ukrainian Minister of Agriculture Mykola Solskyj is suspected of corruption. According to the information, between 2017 and 2021, land belonging to a state-owned company in the northern Ukrainian region of Sumy was transferred to new owners. Solskyj’s agricultural holding company subsequently started using it. In addition to the minister, employees of the land registry are also suspected of corruption. The attempt to acquire more than 3,200 hectares was thwarted.
Neither Solskyj nor his ministry have commented on the reports so far. He would be the first minister in Zelensky’s cabinet to be named as a suspect in a corruption case. Recently, there has been increasing speculation about a government reshuffle.
“The country steals like there is no tomorrow”
Corruption is a widespread problem in Ukraine, as in many countries of the former Soviet Union. That is why there is always the fear that aid money from the West will also trickle out through opaque channels. Many citizens believe that the country’s leadership enriches itself through financial aid in the context of humanitarian aid. Time magazine recently quoted a senior official as saying, “The country is stealing like there is no tomorrow.”
