The plan, which will consist of five axes, includes a public event for the “symbolic reparation” of victims of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church. In addition, an independent body will determine the compensation that Minister Bolaños expects the Catholic Church to pay.

The Spanish government approved a plan this morning in the Council of Ministers repair that is considering a compensation to the victims of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church whose cases require it, as well as the celebration of a public event for the “symbolic compensation” of the people affected.
As detailed by the Minister of Justice Felix Bolaños At the press conference after the Council of Ministers, an independent body must determine the compensation for the victims. In this sense, he explained that the Sánchez government has already begun discussions with the Spanish Episcopal Conference (CEE) to undertake compensation for the victims. “I don’t think anyone would understand if the church didn’t act as other countries around us have done,” he said.
The ‘Response and implementation plan for the Ombudsman’s report on sexual abuse in the field of the Catholic Church and the role of public power’ follows the recommendations of the report prepared by the Ombudsman.
The Minister of Justice has explained that it consists of five axes: recognition and compensation, comprehensive care for victims, prevention, training and awareness, and finally information and research.
Bolaños believes the plan is the foundation bases for compensation to victims of sexual abuse committed within the Catholic Church, who have been ‘forgotten’ and ‘marginalized’ for decades. “It is time for the Spanish government to pay from public power the enormous debt we owe to the victims of sexual abuse,” Bolaños added.
The text also includes the creation of a supervision committee consists of the ministries involved in the implementation of the measures.
