Night owls experienced a special sight late on Sunday evening in the Canadian province: a freight train that was on fire was heading towards the city of London – it also passed a railway crossing. The burning vehicle eventually came to a stop in a residential area.
Eyewitnesses raised the alarm when they saw the Canadian Pacific Kansas City Railway train on fire. Wooden railway sleepers of five carriages had caught fire.
The train finally came to a stop in a residential area shortly before 11 p.m. Rail cars carrying dangerous goods and hazardous materials were disconnected from the burning cars, Fire Chief Colin Shewell said.
The cargo was set on fire while driving
The loaded railway sleepers were collected outside London, in the Strathroy area, Shewell explained. They then caught fire on the route for an unknown reason. The train was eventually moved to a marshalling yard where firefighters could extinguish the last embers.
“The Transportation Safety Board will review and investigate this incident in detail, taking witness statements and examining all evidence, and ultimately we will learn what caused it and whether the regulations were followed,” rail expert Malcolm Cairns told CBC.
The fire brigade suspects arson
“We will consider anything arson until proven otherwise,” Fire Chief Shewell said. “These were scrap railway sleepers, so they really have no value. They were actually destined to be destroyed.” The damage to the train carriages is estimated at 25,000 dollars (approx. 23,400 euros). There was also damage to an office building worth approximately $10,000 (approximately 9,400 euros).
