Flee the EU Parliament – AfD employee in custody on suspicion of espionage

Date:

After an associate of AfD MEP Maximilian Krah was arrested on Monday on suspicion of espionage for China, an investigating judge at the Federal Court of Justice of Karlsruhe imposed pre-trial detention on the suspect on Wednesday.

According to the Federal Attorney General, the arrested Jian G. allegedly passed on information from the EU Parliament. Krah is a member of the committees on international trade, as well as the subcommittees on human rights and security and defense, and is also part of the delegation for relations with the US. The AfD will enter the European election campaign with him as its top candidate.

According to the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office, the employee was arrested in Dresden on Monday by the criminal police of the state of Saxony. Therefore, the suspect’s apartments were searched.

Krah explained that he learned about his employee’s arrest through the press. He has no further information. “Spying for a foreign state is a serious accusation. If the allegations are found to be true, it would result in immediate termination of employment.”

German citizen G. is said to be an employee of a Chinese secret service. He has been working for Krah since 2019. According to the Federal Attorney General, he repeatedly passed on information about negotiations and decisions in the European Parliament in January this year. He also spied on Chinese opposition members in Germany for the intelligence service.
