In Australia, dramatic deaths pile up when swimming in the Pacific Ocean: three people have now died in one day in strong currents off the east coast.
On Frazer Beach north of Sydney, a woman got into trouble while swimming, broadcaster 9News reports Thursday. Her husband threw himself into the water to help her, but then got into trouble himself.
Other beachgoers eventually managed to bring the already unconscious couple ashore. Despite immediate resuscitation attempts, all help came too late for the approximately 40-year-old victim.
Warning for swimmers
Also on Wednesday, a 60-year-old died while swimming at nearby Forresters Beach. “Every drowning is a tragedy, but three in one day and two deaths in the same place is truly appalling,” said Steve Pearce, CEO of Surf Life Saving. Authorities asked swimmers to swim only on supervised beaches and in marked zones.
Already the fifth accident this year
This is the fifth accident this year in which people died during rescue attempts at sea. Earlier this year, a man died south of Port Macquarie while trying to help his daughter get caught in a current. The girl survived. In another incident, a police officer south of Sydney died trying to save his son from drowning.
