“Maya” has left – the weather remains changeable after the storm

From Sunday to Monday, the storm “Maya” brought hail, heavy rain and wind gusts up to 140 kilometers per hour in this country. Damage was caused in many states and the emergency services were put to the test. After “Maya” has left, summer temperatures are a long way off. The weather will remain changeable in the coming days.

The storm started Sunday afternoon in Vorarlberg, leaving behind fallen branches, flooded streets and cellars. The fire brigade had to be called 31 times within a very short time. According to an initial report, there are no injuries.

“Maya” then moved on towards Tyrol, with wind gusts of 98 kilometers per hour and hail as a result. In this state, the firefighters had to complete 119 missions between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM alone. Sirens could be heard in Kufstein. “Shortly after the storm passed, the sirens of the fire service could be heard,” said one resident. In Salzburg, the firefighters also reported numerous operations. Vehicles were sometimes unable to continue driving on flooded roads.

Alarm level “Orange in Upper Austria”
Shortly before 7 p.m., the storm front finally reached Upper Austria, where fires broke out in Eggelsberg and a restaurant in Schwertberg. Since there had already been local thunderstorms in the south, an “orange” alert level was declared safe. 30,000 households were without electricity in the evening, while on Monday morning there were still about 800 households.

Thunderstorms in Burgenland and Lower Austria the day before
In Lower Austria and Styria, the thunderstorms seen and heard from 9 p.m. were weakened. About an hour later it was raining, lightning and thunder also in Vienna. Severe storms had already called the emergency services in Burgenland and Lower Austria on Saturday evening and Sunday night. For example, they have pumped out cellars and cleared traffic routes.

Agriculture also suffered significant damage. Cereals, maize, potatoes, rapeseed, sugar beet and wine are particularly affected. Torrential rain – in some areas up to 50 liters per square meter within half an hour – and hail damaged more than 7,500 hectares of agricultural land,” according to the Austrian hail insurance company.
