Typing campaign – Baby Gloria urgently needs stem cell donors

Date:

Leutasch in Tyrol stays together and starts a typing campaign with the association “Giving for Life” for the three-month-old baby, who currently has to live in almost complete isolation in the Innsbruck children’s clinic.

Gloria was only able to spend a few days of her young life with her parents and brother. Shortly after birth on February 2, the baby was diagnosed with a rare diagnosis of SCID: severe combined immune deficiencies.

Gloria lacks vital immune cells to fight infections and diseases. The only effective treatment is stem cell transplant.

Only one parent with Gloria
Since the diagnosis, the child born in East Tyrol has had to live almost completely isolated in the pediatric oncology department of the clinic in Innsbruck. “Only one parent is allowed to stay with her at a time, visits are not possible,” says Katharina “Kethe” Ganzer, Gloria’s aunt. Together with the Leutasch community and supported by the Ganghofer Museum cultural center, she launched a typing campaign for stem cell donors. An internal family screening was negative. The “Giving for Life” association is also on board.

May 18 in the Ganghofer Museum cultural center
The Ganghofer Museum cultural center offers space for typing. “For us this is a given,” emphasizes cultural center director Robert Krug. The typing campaign will take place on Saturday, May 18 between 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM. All 17 to 45 year olds from the region are invited. While typing, a cheek swab is taken to see whether someone is suitable as a stem cell donor. Participants will be informed of all details. Registration is not necessary.

International database
By the way: Those who are ultimately not eligible to donate to Gloria are registered in an international database through ‘Giving for Life’. Because they might be able to help other patients.
