The father is seriously ill and has metastases all over his body. In addition to the grief for his wife, mother of two small children, there are financial worries and a desperate search for shelter.
At first glance it is pure idyll: a cute little boy, less than two years old, looking at visitors from ear to ear, leading them by the hand through the colorful garden and happily digging holes in the sandbox. Every now and then he looks at his brother, who is sleeping in the car. It’s only six months old. And all of this in the sun, while the birds are chirping and there are always two dogs that would like to be petted. A mother hugging, brushing and laughing at her children.
Like I said: at first glance. A second look, this time behind the scenes, shows that the Styrian just laughs at her little ones – even though she feels like crying all the time: “the boys have the right to grow up happy,” she says. For the little ones she must be strong and happy.
But in the house the man lies in the darkened room. Someone who used to always be in such a good mood. I loved the sun, the sea and the light. Enjoyed cooking. For the family it was above all else. Now it’s even hard for him to see his little ones. That breaks his heart.
Last year the darkness came almost out of nowhere. He, who was supposedly so healthy, suddenly had a seizure at home. The diagnosis in the hospital made this shock even greater. She threw everyone off the track.
Cancer. Chemotherapy, radiation and tablets followed. Morphine patches to tolerate the pain. Prognosis? We don’t want to ask. The fact that two empathetic people from the hospice association are caring for the family speaks volumes.
The mother, who was pregnant for the second time at the time of the diagnosis, despaired not only because of this but also because of the circumstances. The old rental house is slowly falling apart, there are worms in the woods, not just literally. The roof is so weak that it rains here and there. The wood stove is broken and hardly allows any heat to pass through to small children or the seriously ill. The house is not being renovated and the owner does not want to put anything else into it. Small tasks such as mowing the overgrown lawn become a challenge for the mother, who has to manage all the daily life, two small children and a seriously ill husband.
A place where the family stricken by fate is welcome
It won’t be possible to stay here for long. But finding a hostel is so difficult. It must be a small and cheap house to rent, the two dogs must be allowed, they are an inseparable part of the family and very loved by the children. The place? Rather irrelevant. “It just has to be a good place, with nice people, where we feel safe, welcome and accepted and where the children can grow up in a quiet environment.” We are happy to forward offers.
