A month after the bomb was placed at Jehovah’s Witnesses in Kalsdorf, the police intensified the investigation. A criminal psychologist follows the perpetrator, who is ‘technically savvy’ and very dangerous. Because he could strike again.
It was just Good Friday when Jehovah’s Witnesses were again targeted by a bomber: an unknown perpetrator had planted an explosive device in front of the Kingdom Hall of the religious community in Kalsdorf. Fortunately, the members raised the alarm in time, the harmless service arrived and transported the extremely dangerous package. Dreadful memories of last summer’s attack in Leibnitz immediately surfaced: bombs attached to two cars exploded during and after a prayer session.
The ‘Michael’ research group must track down the perpetrators
Now, a month after the last dramatic incident, the police are intensifying the investigation. The investigation group ‘Michael’, established at the State Bureau for State Security and Combating Extremism (named after the archangel who plays an important role in Jehovah’s Witnesses, note) has consulted a profiler who is supposed to track down the perpetrator. Because: He is dangerous and can strike again!
The explosive power would have been enormous
The investigators, who have conducted dozens of interviews, know this much: the perpetrator must have a deep hatred of Jehovah’s Witnesses with a “regional context” and is an absolute professional. Blueprints for explosives such as those seized in Leibnitz and Kalsdorf cannot simply be downloaded from the Internet.
The explosive power of the latter ‘infernal machine’ was enormous. If it had been blown up, major damage would have been caused to the building of the religious community that has been recognized since 2009. You can’t even imagine what she would have done to people.
How are the interrogations of the Jehovah’s Witnesses going? Police sources say things were slow at first, but there could be more momentum now. According to a judicial investigation by the Public Prosecution Service, the confidentiality of confessions, on which some of the ‘oldest’ witnesses initially based themselves, does not apply.
The agents of the State Criminal Investigation Department hope to get more information here, especially because active and former family members have already given clues. They also have a list of deceased Jehovah’s Witnesses, which is carefully checked.
In any case, the police are taking the situation very seriously. Thank God, similar attacks have happened in this country a long time ago – think of the letter bomber Franz Fuchs in the 1990s and the car bomb in Kindberg in 2000. The protective measures for the affected believers (there are 30 locations of the religious community in Styria) are present.
The unexploded bomb of the perpetrator, which according to the profiler was “technically skilled”, is being closely examined by the experts and the analysis of the traces is in full swing. And the board continues to hope for information from the population – also anonymous and confidential.
