Chaos before the big race – activists interrupt the start of the Rechberg race

Date:

Chaos on the course of the Rechberg Race in Styria. Members of the Last Generation interrupted the start of the “Grand Mountain Prize of Austria” on Sunday. The start of the car race had to be postponed and the demonstrators were pulled from the streets. The group’s argument: “We are all in a race for our future in the face of climate catastrophe.”

Excitement at 9am at the start of the only European mountain championship race in Austria. 270 vehicles will take part in the competition on Sunday, but before all participants can press the accelerator, the event is interrupted. Last-generation demonstrators, wearing high-visibility vests, sit on the track’s tarmac to postpone the event. Emergency services such as fire brigade and police were busy pulling the members off the street.

“It’s not about rejecting cars”
But press spokeswoman Anna Freund (23) immediately makes it clear that the protest is not about rejecting cars: “We respect everyone’s leisure activities. But we cannot stand idly by and let life take its course while the federal government drives our future up the wall. We must draw attention to this dangerous failure – also during the Rechberg race.”

However, the interruption lasted only a short time. After some delays, the competition finally started. Tobias Eder (20) also joined the protest on Sunday: “To avert the climate catastrophe, immediate political decisions and binding measures are needed. Greenwashing and symbolic tree planting campaigns only further the suppression of the crisis.”

Implement the fundamental right to climate protection
As should already be known, the Last Generation calls for the implementation of the recommendations of the Citizens’ Climate Council. According to the group, the protests would end once even the first recommendation – a fundamental right to climate protection – is implemented. Climate activists have already caused commotion in the streets of Austria several times, including by fixing themselves on the street with glue.

According to the latest generation, even more disruptive actions are likely to happen soon. The streets in Vienna will be closed again at regular intervals from May 4, the activists warn.
