“Challenge” – Italy’s Meloni announces his candidacy for the EU elections

Date:

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wants to participate in the EU parliamentary elections in June as the top candidate of her ruling party “Fratelli d’Italia” (FdI – Brothers of Italy). “I have decided to lead FdI in all five Italian constituencies,” Meloni announced on Sunday at a celebratory event in the Adriatic city of Pescara titled “Italy Changes Europe”.

“I want to ask the Italian voters if they are satisfied with our work. If so, I ask them to vote and write my name on the ballot,” Meloni said to applause from her party’s supporters.

Meloni wants to ‘build centre-right majority’
“I am the leader of the European Conservatives and I want them to play a decisive role in Europe. Those who vote for foreign direct investment will further strengthen Italy and our government in Europe. I consider myself a soldier and a soldier first and foremost has to fight when necessary,” he said.

Meloni expressed hope that her candidacy would increase her party’s representation in the EU Parliament. “This means that we can provide more support to the Italian plans in Europe,” the head of government explains. Their aim is to build a centre-right majority in Strasbourg, following the example of Rome.

“We want to put an end to unnatural coalitions between left-wing and center parties. We want to bring the Italian model of a centre-right coalition to Europe. That would be a revolution in European politics: the conservatives must also become strategic in Europe. Our goal is to send the left into opposition. “It is a big challenge, but we can do it,” the Italian Prime Minister said.

Defended government performance
Meloni defended the achievements of her government, which has been in power since October 2022, including supporting Ukraine, combating illegal migration and promoting economic growth. “If today the EU is mainly talking about the protection of the external borders, deportations and stricter rules for NGOs, it is thanks to what Italy has done with this government in these eighteen months,” Meloni explains.
