Trial in Graz – chicken manure scandal: distraction for two farmers

Date:

Two farmers from Styria were tried in Graz on Monday for animal cruelty. It was about some chickens that had been run over by the tractor and then remained there. Videos from the association against animal factories made the incident public and led to investigations. The suspects now got away while distracted.

In August 2022, a 55-year-old farmer allegedly ran over five chickens with a telehandler. Two or three were still alive afterward, but just lay there. The father (83) and the stable owner are said to have watched, but took no action to slaughter the animals, as required by law in such a case.

First trial in March
The son partially confessed during the first hearing in March, but said he had not seen the chickens. This incident caused great damage to the family as the AMA seal of approval was withdrawn from the company. The lawyer admitted that the footage “looks terrible,” but it was all an accident.

Expert advice has been obtained
Because the 83-year-old gave the impression during the first hearing that he could not always follow what was happening, judge Martin Heissenberger ordered an expert opinion. Psychiatrist Manfred Walzl confirmed that the suspect was able to follow the procedure. The 83-year-old said he walked through the chicken coop and didn’t notice that at least two chickens were still alive.

“I have the impression that you are sorry,” the judge said to the two farmers. He offered them a diversion, which they accepted after a brief consultation with the lawyer. The father must pay a fine and expert costs of 3,723 euros. For the son, the total amount is 2,700 euros. If the money has not been paid by the end of October, negotiations will continue.
