Israel continues to wait for a response from Hamas to the ceasefire offer, in an increasingly tense climate

Date:

In addition to international pressure, Turkey’s suspension of trade relations until a ceasefire is reached, and Colombia’s severance of diplomatic ties, Israel is now joined by disagreements within the government.

The Israeli deal proposal is still on the table, and for now no response from Hamas. Its leader, Ismail Haniye, stated on Thursday that the group is considering in a “positive spirit” this proposal for the release of the hostages and a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, which does not mean that Hamas has also made it clear this week that this will happen. ceasefire negotiations and the release of hostages will be paralyzed as Israel launches a ground operation against the city of Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip.

Today it was learned that a Hamas delegation will arrive in Cairo this Saturday to continue the mission talk. Haniye also expressed his gratitude for the mediation of Egypt, which is working with Qatar and the United States in maintaining contacts.

Precisely, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, during his seventh visit to Jerusalem, emphasized the importance of concluding an armistice treaty with the Palestinian group as soon as possible to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanhayu.

And the more time passes, the greater the international community’s pressure on Israel to halt its offensive against Gaza, after killing more than 34,600 people and injuring nearly 80,000 in seven months.

Israel and internal pressure

International pressure on Netanyahu to abandon the offensive is increasing, but so is Netanyahu’s far-right partners’ rejection of a possible ceasefire.

The Israeli Minister of Finance, supremacist Jew Bezalel Smotrichon Friday again denounced and demanded a possible ceasefire with Hamas an invasion “with all might” against the city of Rafah in Gaza, where 1.4 million people live in overcrowded conditions.

In inflammatory language, the minister accuses the United States of granting “immunity” to the Palestinian group and its leaders and preventing Hamas from being “destroyed.”

Smotrich, along with fellow Jewish supremacists National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir and Settlements Minister Orit Strock, have already threatened to leave Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government if an agreement is reached and the offensive stops.

However, these statements coincide with today’s publication in the newspaper The times of Israelof a questionnaire, according to which, the 54% of Israelis support this proposal achieving one agreement with Hamas for the release of the 133 hostages held by the Palestinian group, although it is unknown how many are still alive.

In front of them stood A 38% of Israelis show up in favor of a military invasion of Rafah.

The survey shows that 79% of far-right voters support a ground offensive against the Gaza region, while 81% of center and left voters support a pact to free those still kidnapped.
