The work on the mega construction site of the Tauernautobahn in the Liesertal turns out to be more complex and difficult than expected. The planned increase in the valley crossing must be postponed for several weeks.
Since March, the supporting structure of the bridge on the A10 in Liesertal has had to be raised to eight meters so that a new one can be built underneath. But what motorists see so far are only the red posts, up to 16 meters high, that support the crossing. “Unfortunately, the construction company misjudged the timing. The work is more challenging than expected,” said Asfinag spokesman Walter Mocnik, explaining the delay.
“It’s never happened before”
He further explains: “It’s all about the right working materials, mounting the pier heads and working accurately with the lifting equipment. You don’t want to rush anything, caution is required.” The Asfinag spokesperson points out the extraordinary challenges on the construction site: “It is not an everyday activity. We have never had a bridge constructed in this form over a length of 600 meters before.”
Any other form of restructuring would make no sense. “From a geological point of view, this chosen method is the best to implement – especially because of the sustainability effect.” It should also be kept in mind that the transition is located in a gorge and that the Katschbergstrasse and the Lieser River lie below it.
The next date for the increase is mid-May, Mocnik says: “But we still have plenty of time. Companies must be able to work in peace.”
