Animal protection a secondary matter? – Storch case: Salzburg AG filed a complaint

Date:

By removing a wild bird’s nest in the Leopoldskron, the Salzburg energy giant may have violated several laws. There’s a notice with the city magistrate.

A small success for the “Krone” – a big success for the brave neighbors of the Wildmoos and Obermoosweg in Leopoldskron. They had seen Salzburg AG roughly remove a stork’s nest from an electricity pole near Moosstrasse more than two weeks ago.

Because there had already been a short circuit and because they had acted to protect the animals, as the energy giant assured the “Krone”. Moreover, according to the company’s estimate, this involved only “a few locations”.

“Without a nest there is no brood”
Conservationists and bird experts may see things very differently. “It should be common knowledge that wildlife, including migratory birds, should not be disturbed at all during the breeding phase. This also includes nest building, because without a nest there is no brood,” an ornithologist explained when asked on Thursday.

The fact is: the nature conservation authority of the city of Salzburg has now filed a complaint against Salzburg AG. For unlawfully removing a nest of wild birds. “This was contrary to EU law and the Salzburg law in combination with the Regulation on the Protection of Plant and Animal Species,” Florian Kreibich (ÖVP) explained to the “Krone”.

Bernd Huber, responsible chief magistrate, added: “The facts are being investigated and the report is being processed by the criminal justice office. The defendant will be called to comment.” Theoretically, Salzburg AG could be fined up to 14,600 euros.

In any case, it is also clear that the Moosstrasse, with its nearby lush meadows, is ideally located in an idyllic location for stork offspring: “You can speak of a good breeding ground,” says Hemma Gressel from Birdlife.
