The Catholic organization ‘Catholic Answers’ has developed an AI chatbot called ‘Pastor Justin’ that aims to answer questions about the Catholic faith 24 hours a day. But the digital priest raises eyebrows with his sometimes bizarre, sometimes wrong answers.
‘Pastor Justin’ is based on a huge dataset of texts and documents about the Catholic faith. But when it comes to answering user questions, the AI sometimes seems to overstep its mark. For example, the chatbot explained that dousing with the blue electrolyte drink Gatorade was completely fine, that it could hear confessions and even give absolution.
Those responsible are disillusioned by the mistakes of their AI priest. They had been testing the chatbot for over six months, but users were asking questions that they simply did not expect.
