London Mayor Sadiq Khan has secured a third term in office. The 53-year-old received 43.7 percent of the vote, while his challenger Susan Hall received 32.6 percent. Khan has been London’s first Muslim leader since 2016.
With his re-election, he is also the first mayor to get a third term in office. The British media therefore reported a ‘historic success’. During the election campaign, the Social Democrat had promised, among other things, to offer free school meals in the future and to freeze local transport prices. He wants to create 40,000 new social housing units and ensure that homeless people no longer have to sleep on the streets by 2030.
Popularity declined
However, Khan extended the environmental zone, which his predecessor Boris Johnson had introduced for the city center, to the entire city area, which caused criticism. Commuters in particular complained about having to purchase new, expensive vehicles. According to opinion polls, Khan recently did not have high levels of approval.
Nevertheless, the British opposition Labor party had expected a victory in the London elections. Susan Hall, Conservative candidate, received 32.6 percent of the vote. It was suspected that she could benefit from low turnout among Labor supporters and dissatisfaction with the low emissions zone (see protest video above).
This has been in force since August 2023 and stipulates that only vehicles that meet certain emission standards can enter the capital for free. Diesel vehicles, on the other hand, have to pay to participate in traffic. This causes criticism among professionals, among others.
