Hundreds of people took to the streets in Hamburg on Saturday against Islamism and anti-Semitism. The demonstration was planned as a counter-demonstration against an Islamic event that called for a caliphate a week ago.
It was carried out in exactly the same place: on the stone dam in St. Georg. The counter-demonstration was organized by Al Ertan Toprak, federal chairman of the Kurdish community, and the associations Kulturbrücke Hamburg and Secular Islam. According to police, about 800 people responded to their call.

They took to the streets against Islamism and anti-Semitism, but also against liberal values and the Basic Law. “No one harms the Islamic religion and Muslims more than the Islamists themselves,” Toprak said. At the same time, he accused politicians of having neglected the problem of political Islam for too long and leaving it to right-wing populism – for example out of fear of anti-Muslim tendencies.
A man was led away
As reported, the group Muslim Interaktiv, classified as extremist, called for a caliphate last week. This form of rule dates back to the time after the death of Islam’s prophet, Muhammad, in 632 AD. This is a system based on Islamic law (Sharia). The caliph was Muhammad’s deputy and both religious and secular ruler.
A sympathizer of the group who wore the traditional headscarf of Arab men and demonstratively raised his index finger after Toprak’s words caused unrest on Saturday. The police took the man away to applause from the crowd.
