Police shot dead a 16-year-old in the Western Australian city of Perth on Saturday evening after he attacked a man with a kitchen knife. The victim is in hospital. The crime may have a terrorist background.
“At this point it appears he acted alone,” Western Australian Prime Minister Roger Cook said of the attacker during a televised press conference (see video above). He had stabbed a man in his thirties in the back. Authorities say the victim was taken to the hospital and is listed in stable condition.
Concerned phone calls from Muslims
According to state authorities, there are signs that the boy has been radicalized online. Before the attack, calls were also received from concerned members of the local Muslim community. Cook thanked them for their help.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who was briefed by police and investigating authorities, said the threat had passed. “We are a peace-loving nation and there is no place for violent extremism in Australia,” Albanese wrote on Platform X.
Priest stabbed during mass
The incident comes just weeks after an Assyrian Christian bishop was stabbed in Sydney during a livestreamed mass. In this context, the police have now charged several teenagers with terrorist crimes.
Shortly before the attack on the preacher, a knifeman stabbed six people to death in a shopping center in the Sydney seaside resort of Bondi.
