The University of California returned to in-person classes on Monday following the pro-Palestinian protests. However, the police are still on campus. Security measures need to be changed urgently, said director Gene D. Block.
A new unit should be solely responsible for security on the university campus. The previous head of the Sacramento Police Department was named chief. “The campus will return to normal operations and plans to remain so for the remainder of the week,” the university said in a statement.
As reported, pro-Palestinian protests at American universities began in mid-April at the renowned Columbia University in New York. They had spread to at least thirty other universities in the country (see video above).
Anti-Semitic incidents
On the one hand, the demonstrators denounced the high number of deaths in the Gaza Strip. On the other hand, they call on university management to cut ties with companies linked to Israel. There were also repeated anti-Semitic incidents.
On Thursday, police cleared a protest camp in Los Angeles and arrested more than 200 demonstrators. On Friday, the university in California announced the temporary switch to online activities.
