Just a few weeks before the start of the European Football Championship in Germany, the US urges more caution when traveling to our neighboring country. The background is the risk of terrorist attacks.
The United States has upgraded safety instructions for Germany to level two out of four, as German magazine Spiegel reports. The US State Department writes on its website that terrorist groups continue to plan attacks in Germany. Tourist attractions, transport hubs, markets, shopping centres, hotels, clubs and restaurants are mentioned as destinations. Parks, sports and cultural facilities, airports and other public areas are also listed.
Four-stage security system
The US has a four-level security system. Germany has now reached level two (“exercising better caution”). Level three means “Reconsider the trip” and level four means “Do not travel.”
While Austria is at level 1 (“Exercise normal caution”), other European countries are also listed, as is Germany. These include France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
Concerns about attacks at major events
Major events fuel the fear of attacks, and this also applies to the European Football Championship, which starts in Munich on June 14 with the match between Germany and Scotland. The final will take place on July 14 in Berlin. Other locations include Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Cologne, Leipzig and Stuttgart.
