After a Russian military intelligence hacker group attacked targets in Germany, the federal government responded: the ambassador was recalled to Berlin for consultations.
A Foreign Affairs spokeswoman announced the decision on Monday to bring diplomat Alexander Graf Lambsdorff to the capital. “This is a common procedure after events similar to the ones we experienced,” she explained. The ambassador must therefore stay in Berlin for a week and then return to his post in Russia.
Hacker group APT28 under suspicion
The reason for the measure is the cyber attacks against the government, parties and companies in Germany, for which the Russian hacker group APT28 is blamed. She is assigned to the Russian secret service GRU. “The federal government takes this event very seriously as conduct against our liberal democracy and the institutions that support it,” the State Department spokeswoman said. Russia denies involvement in the attacks.
Also attacks on Poland and the Czech Republic
In addition to the SPD and CDU parties, the large-scale cyber attacks also affected government services and companies in the logistics, armaments, aerospace and IT sectors. Foundations and associations were also affected. There were similar attacks in the Czech Republic and Poland. All three countries are among the biggest European supporters of Ukraine, against which Russia has been waging a war of aggression for more than 800 days.
