Activists with pro-Palestinian banners have been camping on the Old AKH campus in Vienna for three days. But now counter-protesters are defying them. The police are on the scene.
There are dozens of people who demand, among other things, ‘freedom for Palestine’ and ‘justice’. On Wednesday around noon, the pro-Palestinian activists were joined by counter-protesters.
According to media reports, the counter-protesters held Israeli flags aloft. The police have “sufficient manpower on site to ensure everything runs smoothly”, they announced on Twitter on Wednesday.
Numerous protests in the US
Background: Pro-Palestinian protests have been keeping numerous US universities and the country’s authorities on edge for weeks. The starting signal was on April 17, when students from Columbia University in New York began setting up a tent camp on campus. This led to a national protest movement.
Students are demanding that universities end academic relationships with Israeli institutions and withdraw from investments related to Israel or the war in Gaza.
