Fine of 600 euros – Greta Thunberg convicted for climate protests

Date:

Climate activist Greta Thunberg has been convicted of blocking the Swedish parliament. She must pay the equivalent of about 600 euros, part of which is compensation and interest.

Police carried the 21-year-old away on March 12 and 14 after she refused to leave the main entrance of parliament in Stockholm. She had been protesting with a small group for several days. The officers were still able to enter the building via side entrances.

Thunberg denied civil disobedience charges in both cases in court on Wednesday. “Because there was and is a climate emergency,” the Swede explained why she did not follow police orders. “And in an emergency, we all have a duty to act.”

“Laws protect the raw materials industry”
“Current laws protect extractive industries instead of protecting people and the planet, which I believe should be the case,” the activist continued. Thunberg was previously fined for civil disobedience during similar protests in July and October 2023.

As a 15-year-old student, the young woman started sitting in front of the Swedish parliament in Stockholm on Friday, demonstrating for more climate protection. Their school strike expanded into the global protest movement Fridays For Future. Thunberg ended the strikes after leaving school, but still regularly participates in climate protests and other demonstrations.
