Police have started clearing the pro-Palestinian protest camp on the campus of the University of Vienna, on the grounds of the Old General Hospital. A police spokesperson confirmed this on Thursday evening – the evacuation therefore started in the afternoon.
Activists had previously announced by email that about 200 police officers had surrounded the student camp and given protesters 15 minutes to leave the area.
According to an APA cameraman, at least 100 people gathered in front of the campus to show solidarity with the demonstrators. They chanted slogans and blocked traffic on Alser Straße in the Alsergrund district.
According to police reports, a hundred people pitched their tents on Monday on the campus of the University of Vienna, at the Old AKH, after a ‘pro-Palestine’ demonstration. The University of Vienna “resolutely” distanced itself from the protesters’ concerns.
Camps were also set up and buildings occupied at universities in the US and Europe. During their evacuation there was sometimes violence.
