Wearing a Palestinian scarf, Thunberg raised the mood against Israel for the ESC

Date:

Shortly before the start of the second semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest, thousands of people gathered in the center of Malmö on Thursday to take part in an anti-Israel march. Leading the procession was ‘Fridays for Future’ icon Greta Thunberg wearing a Palestinian scarf.

The demonstrators marched south from the central square of this year’s ESC host city to protest Israel’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. Well-known slogans such as “From the river to the sea – Palestine will be free” or “Boycott Israel” were shouted.

Exclusion of Israel demanded
The demonstrators demanded that the country be excluded from the competition due to the Gaza war. “In general, everything is calm,” is how a police spokesperson described the demonstration to the Reuters news agency.

Austria and Israel are competing for a place in the final
Israeli candidate Eden Golan, like Austrian representative Kaleen, must triumph in the second semi-final in the evening to obtain one of the ten final tickets. This means that Israel could participate in the grand final round of the music competition on Saturday.

The organizers of the association “Stoppa Israels” have also announced major demonstrations against Israel for Saturday and say they expect 30,000 participants.
