Dominican environment minister is shot dead in his office

The author of the recordings, who has been arrested, is a childhood friend of the deceased

The President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, has declared three days of mourning for the murder of Environment Minister Orlando Jorge Mera, who was shot in his own office by a childhood friend who later turned himself in to authorities.

The suspect arrived at the office visibly nervous and it was the minister himself who calmed the initial suspicions of his staff: “Don’t worry, Miguel is my friend,” he said at the time, according to the newspaper ‘Listín Diario’.

After the shooting, the 56-year-old alleged perpetrator ran from the building and reached a church just under two miles away. With the weapon still in his possession, he appeared before the priest and confessed that he had committed a murder, without identifying the victim.

The prosecution eventually negotiated with Cruz, who “said he would surrender if the prosecution guaranteed his life,” a statement from the agency said.
