A firefighter turned out to be a lifesaver in Thal, Styria on Friday afternoon. When the alarm went off that an 81-year-old had driven his car into a pond, he rushed to the scene faster than the rest of the team. Thanks to him, Styria survived the accident. It is still unclear why he ended up in the pond.
Fortunately, the firefighter from the Steinberg-Rohrbach volunteer fire brigade was near the fish pond into which an 81-year-old would fall on Friday afternoon. The 31-year-old comrade was alerted by mobile phone and immediately rushed to the scene of the accident in Thal with his tractor. For reasons still unclear, the driver of his car fell over an embankment and ended up in the pond – the SUV was almost completely submerged.
The brave firefighter jumped into the pond and smashed the rear side window of the vehicle with a rock. This way he was able to free the 81-year-old, who was still conscious. The Red Cross and the Christophorus 12 rescue helicopter had now also arrived at the scene of the accident.
The ambulance crew carried out the necessary first aid measures and took the motorist with injuries of an undetermined nature to the LKH Graz-West. The lifesaver also injured his hand and had to be treated and taken to hospital.
The FF Steinberg-Rohrbach then started to recover the vehicle together with the divers from the Sappi Gratkorn fire brigade. They were the fire brigades Steinberg-Rohrbach, St. Oswald-St. Bartholomä and the Sappi Gratkorn company fire brigade in action.
