He has had his high school diploma since he was eight years old. He also studied electrical engineering. Today’s 12-year-old child prodigy Laurent Simons also has his master’s degree in physics – again with the highest distinction – summa cum laude. The boy, with an IQ of 145 and already compared to Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking, has great career goals: he wants to study how organs can be artificially produced.
Laurent collects prizes like his peers collect football stickers: he had already completed his bachelor’s degree in Antwerp in no time, also “with the highest praise”. At the age of eight he had his high school diploma in his pocket. He then studied electrical engineering in Eindhoven in the Netherlands.
12-year-old examined at the Max Planck Institute
At the beginning of this year, the little Belgian was a guest student at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and the venerable Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics at the research center in Garching. There Laurent was allowed to participate in a research project and use a laser to detect the smallest cancer cells in the blood. That comes very close to his dream: Laurent wants to investigate how organs can be made artificially in the future.
After the summer he wants to continue his studies – maybe medicine. He still has to think about it, Laurent tells the dpa. Because studying mathematics would also appeal to him – or just both subjects. In this way he was able to combine all his knowledge from physics, medicine and the world of numbers to be able to do extensive research.

Laurent is described by his parents as a friendly, reserved and above all eager to learn. “It’s always been like this,” Mother Lydia recalled. “Why, why, why?” he asked all day. Now it’s often the other way around, she admits – then she asks the twelve-year-old. Papa Alexander also confirms this.
