Tragic mountain accident Friday in the Tyrolean Alpbachtal: After an 82-year-old German did not return from a hike on the Reither Kogel, a major search operation was launched in the evening. In the middle of the night there was a sad certainty: the man could only be found dead.
In the afternoon, the 82-year-old German left alone for a walk along the panoramic route on the Reither Kogel. “After the man did not return until the evening, his wife reported the incident to the police around 8:30 p.m.,” investigators said.
Major search started
Shortly afterwards, a major search operation was launched, in which police, mountain rescue services and fire brigades took part. Drones and helicopters with thermal imaging cameras were also used.
Body discovered in steep terrain
Around 11 p.m. there was a sad certainty: the police helicopter crew was able to locate the kidnapper on the steep, impassable terrain below the so-called “Way of the Cross”. All help came too late for the 82-year-old: he was already dead.
Autopsy ordered
As part of a complex rescue operation, the deceased was eventually brought to the valley by mountain rescue around 2am. “An autopsy has been ordered to determine the cause of death,” police said.
