Mystery about the cause: the watchtower suddenly collapsed and burned down

Date:

The Fronbergwarte in Schardenberg (Upper Austria) was built 30 meters high from wood in 1886 and replaced by a brick building in 1931. It has been closed since 2016 for safety reasons. The structure suddenly collapsed on Friday evening. Fortunately, no one was injured.

That could have ended badly. In Schardenberg, the fire brigade was called to rescue people after a building collapsed on Friday around 7:15 p.m. The lookout tower on the Fronberg – which has been closed for years – had collapsed.

Fortunately, FF Schardenberg operational manager Sebastian Mackinger was told upon arrival that there were almost certainly no people left under the rubble.

Fire broke out
Because a fire had broken out in the old walls, the 43 emergency services immediately started extinguishing the fire. Because smoke kept coming out of the rubble, an excavator was eventually deployed. This moved the debris aside and allowed the embers to be extinguished.

The two fire brigades from Schardenberg and Wernstein were in action until 11 p.m. on Friday and work continued on Saturday. What caused the fire and the collapse – or vice versa – is still the subject of a police investigation. The scene of the accident was searched with a police dog on Saturday.
